Lake County Emissions Inspections

Indiana requires vehicles registered in Lake County to pass an emissions test (also known as a Clean Air Check) and tampering inspection every two years, with a few exceptions. Cars Plus is authorized to perform emissions inspections.

Emissions Inspections

In Indiana, an emissions inspection is required for all vehicles except those listed as exempt. Vehicles manufactured in odd-numbered years will test in odd-numbered years and those manufactured in even numbered years will test in even-numbered years.

How is My Vehicle Tested for emissions?

The model year of your vehicle determines which type of test the inspector will use:

• Gas Cap Pressure Check: All vehicles receive this test to ensure the cap remains effective at preventing gas vapors from escaping
• OBD II Test: This test is performed on vehicles model year 1996 or newer; the emissions inspector downloads data from the on-board computer to ensure everything is operating within specifications
• Inspection and Maintenance (I/M 93) Test: This test is performed for vehicles model year 1981 through 1995. The vehicle is driven on a dynamometer that simulates driving on the road. Tailpipe emissions are captured and analyzed.
• Single Idle Speed (BAR 90) Test: This test is for 1976 to 1980 model year vehicles. The inspector inserts a metal probe into the tailpipe while the vehicle idles to sample the exhaust stream. A sensor is placed on the hood to measure engine speed. Emissions are then analyzed.
